Seoul Warriors 2010 Season Update - American Football in Korea

The Seoul Warriors found their winning ways after a disappointing season opener, defeating the ADT CAPS in an exhibition game on Oct. 16 at Seoul American High School on the Yongsan Garrison.  But the game was not pretty to watch as the Warriors' offense struggled for most of the game and committed seven turnovers.  Fortunately the Warriors' defense and special teams were able to pick up the slack as Maishon Holdbrooks had an interception return for a touchdown and Adam Cross returned a punt for another score.  The CAPS mounted a furious comeback in the second half, but Jason Braedon's 37-yard field goal in the third quarter proved to be the difference as the Warriors held on for a nail-biting 16-14 win.

Two weeks later the Warriors traveled to Goejedo to take on the Samsung Blue Storm in their second league game on  Halloween Sunday.  It was another ugly affair with the Warriors committing sixteen penalties.  Despite the miscues, the Warriors were able to string together a pair of touchdowns on a pass from quarterback Matt Chaput to Adam Cross on a fake punt and a 20-yard run by Lawrence Bowlby.  The Blue Storm clawed their way back into the game with a long interception return in the third quarter leading to a touchdown run on the following play.  But that was as close as the Blue Storm would get as the Warrior defense stood strong to the test.  After trading punts, the Warrior offense held onto the ball and ran the clock out for another win, 14-6.

Up next the Warriors went down to Gumi to square off against the Busan Gryphons in the first round of the KNFL playoffs.  After struggling to win, the Warriors offense and defense were finally able to get things together, but not after a slow first half.  The Warriors opened the scoring in the first quarter as Larrick Johnson punched into the end zone from three yards out.  After missing the extra point, the game stayed at 6-0 until halftime.  And then Warriors offense came alive when quarterback Matt Chaput hit Adam Cross on the Warriors first play from scrimmage in the second half.  Following a thunderous block by Jin Woo, Cross turned the short pass into a 45-yard touchdown run as no Gryphon defender could match his speed in the open field.  The Warriors defense held firm as the Gryphons were forced to punt on their next possession.  Chaput then directed a precision drive down the field, hitting wide receiver Josh Prigge in the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown pass.  After another Gyphons punt, Chaput again led the offense down the field and Larrick Johnson scored his second touchdown near the end of the third quarter with a powerful 6-yard run.  Quentin Carey finished the Warriors scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter as the Warriors easily prevailed, 32-0.

Next up for the Warriors is a rematch with the ADT CAPS in the KNFL semifinals on Nov. 27th.
