On Monday, 4 July 2011, a marine stationed at Ganghwa-do station in Gyeonggi-do blasted his K-2 automatic rifle at his fellow marines killing four and wounding two.
Corporal Kim, a nineteen-year-old whose military service term will have ended in only 9 months, stole a K-2 automatic rifle, some ammo and a hand grenade. At 11:50pm when his fellow marines were asleep, he entered his barrack and started firing killing three and wounding another three, one of who died while being transported to the hospital.
The perpetrator was pushed out of the barrack by a quick-thinking corporal Kwon who himself got shot in the process of his heroic act. He is expected to fully recover from the gun shot wound.
After he was locked out from the barrack, corporal Kim headed into a room and set off his hand grenade, apparently in an attempt to kill himself. But his attempt failed as the grenade only resulted in light injuries. He was arrested and taken into custody by the military police.
It is yet unknown what the motive of the shooting was.
